The Election

(This was written while the Presidential election vote tally was ongoing and key states were too close to call.  It was posted on facebook but I have edited it to improve the flow and sense of it.)  No matter who you support for President of the USA consider that God is sovereign and what you might expect the overall impact on the nation to be could turnout quite different. I was around when Kennedy-Nixon occurred and none of the dire predictions about the presidency of JFK actually happened. God has a plan to allow mankind to hurtle towards the abyss and either leader might either slow down the slide or hasten it. We are not wise enough to know which it is. Trust God, serve Him and be gracious to your friends who disagree with you. God is in control and His will be done on this earth in the years to come.

In Ezekiel 37, is the vision of the dry bones.  It is a prophecy of the return to nationhood for the people of Israel.  This was fulfilled in amazing fashion in 1948.  Their cousins, the Arabs, hated Israel then and still do to this day.  No other nation on earth is regularly threatened with total destruction.  I doubt that the world community would allow such a thing to happen to any other national group but Israel faces it monthly.  Even though I think this is an abomination and an injustice, there is no surprise or puzzle to be had.  God told us that Israel would be hated in Ezekiel 38.

I believe but am not dogmatic about it, that Ezekiel 38 and 39 describe a war that I call the Moslem war.  The larger nations of Islam, led by a powerful nation from the north of Israel, will invade in order to destroy and plunder that tiny sliver of the Middle East.  This has not yet happened because I believe it describes an event still future to the reconstitution of Israel in 1948,  In other words, I think Ezekiel chapters 37, 38, 39 are in chronological order.

One feature of this battle is the description of a number of nations who dither and complain about this invasion but do nothing to stop it (somewhat like the UN.)  Ezekiel 38 13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish with all its villages will say to you, ‘Have you come to capture spoil? Have you assembled your company to seize plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to capture great spoil?’(NASB)

Who are Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish?  Some think they are the other great powers of the world which would, at this present time, include the USA.  Why would the USA stand by and allow Israel to be destroyed?

One possibility is to remember that much of world politics is personal.  President Barack Obama despises Benyamin Netanyahu, Premier of Israel.  From what I have read, Netanyahu likewise loathes Obama.  This is rare since the two nations have been allies for decades.  Mitt Romney and Netanyahu are good friends.  One serious consequence of the reelection of President Obama is the continued strain between the two nations.  Certainly if Israel were to be threatened, it will cost Obama nothing politically to ignore the threat and allow it to progress.  Especially if Russia is leading the coalition.

If Israel bombs Iran soon, it will inflame the Middle East.  It is easy to imagine a united Arab military response and this particular president of the USA might just take his time to come to Israel’s aid.  Not because he hates Jews or Israel but because he despises their leader and since he has made it clear that he does not support military action by Israel against Iran, he can claim Israel must lie in the bed they have made.

All of this would be fulfillment of the prophecies as I and others understand them.  None of this would made sense unless a man like Obama was President of the USA at the time since our nation can easily put a stop to the attack of Ezekiel 37 and 38.  But if we don’t, then God’s word is true yet again.  Perhaps this is the time?  My point is:  don’t complain about election results.  God knows what He is doing.  Further let me make it clear that had Romney been elected, something else equally disastrous might have happened (at this point, the results of the election were apparent.)  We don’t know.  We can only trust that the will of God be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Oh, I forgot to mention that Israel easily wins the great Moslem war of prophecy because God intervenes on her behalf.

I’ll be in the bleachers watching, maybe.

Matthew 6: 9 “Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 ‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’

Amen.

  1. I posted your earlier remarks on my FB page now I have to figure out how to post this whole article. Thank you once again for taking the time to present that biblical timeline. Perhaps you were born for such a time as this. Indeed I think you were.

  2. When you say that Israel will overcome their enemies do you understand that to be the nation as a country or the nation as a people will prevail? Just curious since the two are often interchangeable.

    • The nation is the land is the people. They are intertwined. But the one enemy they will not overcome is antiChrist. They will have to flee and hide from him.

  3. Pastor Brian: Have you read anything by Joel C. Rosenberg? (Fiction & Non-Fiction) He’s really good on these topics.

  4. I have read Rosenberg. I agree that he is a good writer and has interesting insights. I don’t recall any significant areas of disagreement with him. Like you, I recommend him to anyone with the desire to pursue this subject. Good to hear from you Curt!
